The Catalan Way (in Catalan, Via Catalana), also known as The Catalan Way Towards Independence will be a 400 km (249 mile) human chain in support of the fight for Catalan independence from Spain and will take place in Catalonia on September 11th, 2013, which is the National Day of Catalonia.
Organized by the Catalan National Assembly (ANC, a broad and non-partisan movement born out of Catalan civil society), the human chain is planning to cover the entire country to show that the majority of Catalan people want independence for Catalonia....
This initiative will be the second mass participation event organized by the ANC, after the big demonstration on 11th September 2012 when one and a half million people took to the streets of Barcelona.
The 2013 event has historical precedents in Europe which add resonance to its aims and symbolic value. In the summer of 1989, citizens of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania formed a human chain which united the capitals of the three countries. It was a peaceful political demonstration where up to 1,800,000 people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 600 kilometres (370 miles) to demand the independence from the URSS. The Baltic Way was what really took the world's attention and within seven months of the protest, Lithuania became the first to declare independence. Fourteen months later, all three republics had gained their independence.
